A conventional AM receiver won't work, whether it is synthesized or not. It
has to be a receiver with a BFO to provide CW or SSB capability. It probably
helps to have a narrow IF filter in the receiver, but shouldn't be
absolutely necessary. Very good frequency stability is important, but you
don't need an extremely accurate frequency readout. You should be able to
center the Argo or Spectran display at the audio pitch corresponding to the
BCB station carriers, which are easy to identify because they are the
strongest spectral components you will see.
