Hi, Bill,

The below is very respectfully submitted, and is clearly my own opinion :)

I suppose for the casual user (email, web surfing, non-critical apps) most 
could probably make do with windows and struggle by.

But if you need your apps to stay up without crashing, or if more than one 
person needs to use your computer at once (some of mine support 3000+ 
concurrent users) then you need an Operating System.

As for Microsoft's contributions ... well, in 1978 they released a 
program called Editor/Assembler (EDTASM) on cassette tape.  This was a 
machine language assembler for the Z80 microprocessor.  In my opinion, 
this was their last contribution of note.

Of course, a large part of my problem is time.  If I were single, no job, 
and no children, I could probably jump through the hoops needed to get 
some throughput with windows.

Although I wish it were so, I just don't have that kind of time. :(
