I buy your reasons 1 and 3 for a larger RX loop but in contrast to your #2
above I often find the larger the loop, the more often I run into noise from
more than one neighbor. A perfect example is the poor S/N I typically see
from my TX loops when used for receiving. The medium-sized loop (6' sides
seem ideal) is more likely to give the best S/N when I walk around to find
the ideal location (listening and watching the meter, of course, on my
trusty hand-held SVM - soon to be on sale <G>).
Relative to your 60Hz - based noise in the ground: This the one case where I
find increasing the height above ground actually helps.
