Don: This just between you and me. I was licensed in 1948, and the radio
inspector had us draw all the diagrams and then  questioned us on the
circuits, xmtr, rcvr, power supply, "absorption frequency meter - hi ", etc.
Sounds like your experience.
However - my first QSO was 1947 - with W1EOB in Maine - It was so much fun
that I applied for a license.

stations ( 74N 103W), including USAF Thule, Greenland. 45-50 wpm with a
vibroplex - before the first electronic keyer !
