Don't laugh too hard. As Mike S will attest, the original WA beacon was a 
555 with stable capacitor and 10-turn pot for frequency adjustment. I used 
get on the road and check out the signal with my modified ARC-5 receiver and 
2ft loop to check out the latest antenna improvements. Not a big deal if the 
frequency was +/- 5 kHz in those days. It was easy to separate the WA signal 
from others by the frequency shift immediately after keying the 555's 
control input with another 555. Must have been at least 100Hz!

BTW, the first antenna was not that different from the present loop wires 
strung over the top of a bunch of trees. Trouble was - I didn't realize, 
even at LF, each contacted tree is like connecting a 10k resistor to ground, 
so the total Q turned out to be only 4 or so when loaded with a series coil. 
This netted a grand coverage of about 2 miles until I realized what was 
going on.
