Jay,

The slip clutch details are also useful at this end. Today I ordered two 
gear motors from Jameco - one with a 188 to 1 reduction, for the trimmer and 
the other 1000 to 1, for the air variable. I calculate that I can cover at 
least 100k to 200k with either VC if I add a few turns to the new loop 
(which will yield some more signal as well).

BTW, I opened the broken camera that I mentioned and it had a decent motor 
and gear train but not near enough rpm reduction.
