OK Bill-yes it's not so difficult to test any given cap as you
mention-certainly no need to use the loop itself -I have a Tek current probe
setup here which helps as well.
Total LF loop tuning C here is around 16000 pF and is mainly 4700 pF
polystyrenes in series-parallel with a 2000pF air variable across them for
fine tuning. I intend to replace the polystyrene caps soon, as they are
running on the limit with loop current peaks (SSB) up around 30 amps.
I have to test a few other cap options to see just what can best be used as
a replacement for the polystyrenes as they are basically no longer being
made (or so I am told) and in any case I need to quadruple the present
number (70) if I stick with 4700pF as a starting value.
Have a few high voltage transmitting ceramic jobs I need to test-no idea as
to how they will shape up but they are ex MW tx service and certainly have
useful voltage and current ratings for those frequencies.
