It's probably not a matter of antenna Q. More likely,  the larger capture area
(and therefore bigger signal level) off the bigger antenna is causing IMD in
either the loop preamplifier or the receiver front end. You could try inserting
a step attenuator between the loop preamplifier and the receiver. If the problem
is in the receiver front end additional attenuation will remove the problem. If
the loop preamplifier is at fault the attenuation will not remove the problem.
My guess would be the loop preamplifier. If it turns out to be the loop
preamplifier you'll either have to fall back to a smaller size loop or build a
more robust preamplifier.
