Another good idea! And this would really be an attention grabber! What would 
be simplest for me, I suppose, is to just install a switch at the input of 
the chart recorder that records my input current. Should be fast and 
sensitive enough to catch the electrostatic charge events in the area. No 
problem with installing protection diodes ahead of the recorder.

BTW, the use a 10pf capacitor feeding the stray capacity of the woods- 
to-shack cable would not cause a loss of rise time as long as the load 
resistance in the shack (including flash device) is much greater than the Xc 
of the stray capacity. A capacitor divider is formed that has a fast rise 
time. Same principle as the typical 10X or 100X scope probe.
