well the FET has one across the gate input to ground. Normally an open
circuit
until the voltage rises over 60/70 volts or so .Then it fires and makes
an Ionized
path for static build up that could harm the FET. It is an old tried N
true method
to bleed off static from Rcv. inputs. An old method to see storms would
connect one to ground
in the shack and connect an antenna to the other side. You could see the
bulb flicker 
a bright enough flicker would kill you    :)

But would it detect them loopers
