My new project for fall/winter- learn more about electronics (I'm such a slow
learner), especially solid state, by constructing LOWFER transmitters. I've
constructed several tube QRP rigs the past couple of winters in an attempt to
learn (and have fun!). For receiving, my JRC JST-245 and Hytower or 700' NE
beverage seem to hear well. I can copy about 50 airport beacons in seven
states during the day and have copied another 50 in an additional seven or
eight states and Canada at night- all thru the QRN the past several weeks.
Also, Paul, in nearby Colorado Springs has just put 180 KHz RW back on the
air, and it is FB copy hr, 20 miles away. The only other MEDFER? I've copied
is HMY on 510.7, but I don't see it listed anywhere? I have found most of
the LOWFER sites on the WEB and am trying to digest some of the info I've
recently learned. I also recently bought a 179 KHz crystal which resonnates
OK in an old 6AK5 crystal calibrator oscillator I bought years ago at a
hamfest. I may try modifying that oscillator as my first LOWFER transmitter
or maybe modify the 6AQ5 transmitter I built last winter. I have little idea
how do that since my understanding of tank circuits is poor and the inductive
and capacitance values are so much greater than anything mentioned in the
ARRL handbook.
