Thanks Jim. I'll go for the 12v and series resistor to be safe. I didn't see
any corrosion on the cells, and I connected 14.5v across the pack for a few
seconds. They came to life right away. It still spins very fast after 3hrs.
I think the cells are good since they held the initial charge so well. Now
it's off to the parts pile to find the correct walwart.

Hi Mike.
As not what voltage to charge it at but rather what current to charge them
at.
The answer is .1 times the amp hour capacity for 14 hours.
If the Amp/hour capacity is 1 amp/hour (probably close for a C cell),
then charge it at 100 ma. for 14 hours. You could use a 12 volt wall wart
with
a 60 ohm .6 watt ( 1 watt to be safe) resistor in series.
If it is a rapid charge pack then try .4 times the amp/hour capacity for 3.5
hours.
40% overcharge is used for charging inefficiency.
