The horizontal portions can't be neglected because there is a big 
doughnut-like field surrounding ALL portions of the loop wire (this seems 
like a broken phonograph record lately). Mess with this and you, first off, 
change the shape of this field, often lowering the Q of this one-turn coil 
(apartentely not in your case). Secondly, the field in the metal roof could 
have vertical components, causing a distortion of the vertically polarized 
field. .......but on the other hand you could have a reinforced vertical 
component and end up with the first crossed field antenna that actually 
works! .......... No, forget I said that!<G>
