And perhaps the antenna plays a part.  Most of us use verticals for 
transmitting, which have a low angle of radiation.  Not sure about the 
radiation angle of transmitting loops.  On 160M, my verticals suffer, 
compared to a low 1/2 wave dipole, up to several hundred miles.  I've never 
seen a skip zone on 160M, but occasionally on 80M.  
"AH"on about 1694.7 was off the air while I operated CQWW this past weekend.  
It will return tonight, but be off for the SS this coming weekend.
Winter weather here at 9000' elevation prevents getting LOWfer transmitter 
matched to Hytower antenna.
