I checked out the NDBs with the new antenna and was amazed at the

Bill,
You should hear the NDBs I can copy with the TX antenna connected to a
receiver. I don't think there is a single NDB frequency I can't find at
least one signal on, even at midday. Of course the coil needs to be
retuned every few kc for optimum selectivity.
The selective level meters I use for receive need some outboard
selectivity. The tuned balanced loop with Lyle's preamp circuit is the
best I've found to use ahead of the SLMs. I guess a good receiver with
a good active antenna mounted in the clear would probably receive just
as well. I just don't think an active antenna out the top of my tallest
trees would survive long the way sparks fly around here when a thunder
storm pops up. We do occasionally have lightning during the winter.
I've seen lightning while it was snowing a few times! The balanced loop
hides under the trees.
