The remote meter reading system that was installed here is not a polled
device. It sends data ALL THE TIME. The Hunt Technologies web site confirms
what I was told by the guy who installed it; the time to get a complete
reading can be as long as 27 hours. There are lots of technologies out there
for remote meter reading. My luck was to get one that's LF-unfriendly! On my
receiver, it sounds a lot like Loran-C pulses, except that it's all over the
LF band.
A walkaround with the Sony ICF-2001 shows that the interference is intense
near the house wiring, and is quite strong near any wires (such as the
buried cables going to my HF antennas and receiving loop) that are connected
to the power mains via grounds or equipment. A well-isolated loop out in the
pasture might solve the problem. But first I'm going to talk to the company
that makes the system, and if there isn't an easy fix I'll try to get the
old meter re-installed.
