The 10 MHz reference out of the the GPS box plugs right into the reference input
of the HP 3586C. The GPS unit I'm using is the Z3801A. It's real nice but a
little pricey at around $250 on ebay. It is WELL worth the money however. The GPS
communicates via a serial port and the HP Satstat program The software is often
included when you buy the receiver. If not, it is readily available.
