Hello Barry,
   what I suggest you is to start from the simple and basic article on the subject
that you can find on the ARRL Radioamateurs's Handbook.
On my 2000 edition, it starts at page 18-11 and the titles of the relevant sections are:
"Nonlinear processes" and "Demodulating signals".
After having digested it, I suggest reading some basic books on DSP, like the
bible from Oppenheim & Schafer "Digital Signal Processing" (Prentice-Hall)
and the very good book from Proakis & Manolakis :
"Digital Signal Processing - Principles, Algorithms, and Applications",
Macmillan Publishing Company, ISBN 0-02-396815-X
