Why wouldn't it work? A helical wound vertical is just a stretched out 
loading coil that uses the capacity of the upper portion to form a resonant 
circuit. Trouble is - the Q of the system is not up to par with typical top 
loaded verticals since the ideal 2.5 diameter/length ratio for an inductor 
is violated to a big degree. Therefore the all- important antenna current is 
inferior to a typical vertical.
