Thank you. I heartily endorse the purchase of an R-75 for Lowfer work. It's
a nice radio, and the price is entirely reasonable for what you get. I would
suggest one or two narrower IF filters as an option. I started with the 500
Hz 1st IF filter, and later added the 250 Hz 2nd IF filter. You've gotta
remember gift-giving opportunities like birthdays...
Anyway, for lowfer work, the DSP option is of little value, though you can
usually get it for "free" as a dealer promotion. The high stability time
base is more useful, though if you leave the receiver turned on in a fairly
temperature stable enviroment, it's probably not necessary.
The MDS at 180 kHz in a 500 Hz BW is about -138 dBm, which is quite good for
an all-band radio. Use of an external preamp is common with loop antennas.
My external 50 ohm in/out loop preamp brings the MDS to about -143 dBm, and
that's about the best I've done. External noise will almost always be the
limiting factor, even with weak signals.
A good radio. If you can afford it, go for it.
