I use 49MHz mainly because it's unusual and it's an unlicensed band. By getting people into unlicensed (albeit really hard to use) radio, if they enjoy it, they may get into ham radio. I also plan to use 6 meter SSB as well as soon as I get a compatible radio. With 49MHz, you can also use any mode you want, as Part 15 does not have any mode restrictions for 49MHz. The only downside is the 50mw power limit. :(
