I wouldn't doubt it that they are running a totally stupid power level. I
knew of a guy a few years back that ran a 5kw amp on the low bands, I even
had to go see it on the Bird wattmeter keyed down to believe it. It easily
put out 5kw on the low HF bands. No wonder it is so hard to reliably work
anywhere with 100w anymore. I remember working SSB with 100w and my 1/4th
wave inverted L down to Mexico and up to Alaska on 160-meters. There will be
the nut case that will crank up the KW or so on LF some day if it hasn't
already been done. There will always be lids on the ham bands unfortunately.

By the way, I suspect that to these guys "high power" means more than 10
kW!
