John, W1TAG, noticed this Argo visual enhancement, when viewed from a
distance effect, back when I first put the saw tooth signal on 510.500
khz. At normal viewing distance form the screen the signal could hardly
be detected unless you knew it was there. But when you backed away the
image was very noticeable.
My first experience with audio copy at a distance occurred many years
ago when I was active on 432 MHz EME. I was hearing a random CQ over
and over again but just could not pull it through. I gave up and went
to the toilet down the hall. While sitting on the stool I had perfect
copy on DL5KR. Quickly returning to the shack to call him I found that
the signal was once again in the noise. I thought the signal had just
peaked while was out of the shack. The power of toilet reception did
not become apparent to me until the same thing happen a few days later.
I thought about running a keying circuit into the toilet but decided
that wasn't necessary when I learned to reduce the volume and move the
speaker around to find a hot spot for reception.
