This is the traditional way mail lists are managed. Over the years I have 
managed nine or ten different lists and this has always been the process 
followed. Given the fact that mail lists are for the sharing of information 
on a wide scale this is appropriate, and it encourages those who might 
otherwise reply privately to share with the entire group, thus meeting the 
purpose of the list! 

I like it this way.
