Mike & The Group,
I confess to feeling that this should have been at least "mentioned" during
the planning stages to Lowfers, since the potential impact on our hobby
is much greater than AMRAD or the other Part 5 experiments have been
in the past. But as I've pointed out in the past, with the lack of any
real structure or leadership within the LWCA, we will always be
vulnerable to changes within this spectrum.
So with that in mind, I'd opt to "join them" rather than "fight them".
Mike, can you forward information on how N1LF can join the ranks of
these amateurs? Also, unless their is some need for confidentially,
I'm sure we'd all like to know who the other members of the group are.
I have a MOSFET final amp from the 1980's that can easily handle
75 watts or so of input...so going QRO shouldn't be too much
of a problem. Though I also don't understand why it would really
be needed. However, I caution everyone that working at high
power in this spectrum is dangerous. Corona induced fires are
common, and RF burns can be nasty. If you don't have military
or civilian experience working at LF, I'd strongly recommend
keeping the power levels below 25 watts.
As for developing shorter and more portable antennas, good luck.
The laws of physics won't change simply because you have
a Part 5 or amateur license. Like AMRAD, I'm sure that after
years of experimentation, most amateurs will still find that
monopole verticals and flat tops still work the best
if real estate and money are not limitless.
Some big gun may be able to put up towers with large tophats
that are 200 feet tall, but other than that...don't expect a lot
of improvement over lowfer techniques.
The pioneering work on this band has already been done, and I'm
proud to say it was largely done by Part 15 experimenters.
Mike, sign me up.
73,
Les
