When I switched from the power supply to the battery the noise floor on
518khz the noise floor dropped quite a bit! ...My question now is, is it
possible to operate the station from the battery full time,
with the charger connected and protected, perhaps by diodes or something?
Have others tried this!!!??

I run my Icom 706 from two deep cycle marine batteries connected in
parallel. It is possible to get about 100 watts out. I'm not sure what
the maximum duty cycle or transmit time actually is prior to excess
voltage drop. I've used this setup for nearly 3 years with few problems
and the rig does run relatively quiet. For charging, I use a "Sure
Charge" which is a full time, voltage sensing trickle charger that is
permanently running from the 120 volt lines. For higher power rigs you
could probably use more batteries in parallel.
