Not sure why you would need diodes for anything. I operate my 2 meter
repeater conrinuously from a pair of paralleled marine batteries with a
charger connected to them. The charger is a Heath unit, which tapers off
the current as the battery is charged. Since the circuit uses a pair of
SCR's in the regulator (which send pulses to the battery), I had to resort
to adding a choke input filter to its output to clean up the DC. But a
small current limited charger can be applied full-time with no problem.
(Our PBX at work does the same thing - runs off 48V battery that is
constantly being charged).
