First of all, I need to clear up some confusion regarding wire spacing.
I
think in terms of center to center spacing between turns, while Bill
Bowers
talks about spacing between wire edges. Bill's "single wire" spacing
and my
"two wire diameters" are really the same thing. Reg Edwards uses the
ratio
of "wire diameter to winding pitch", which would be 0.5 for what I call
two
wire diameter spacing. There, I'll bet that really helped!

I understand, esp. when explained in this context. But I wonder why the
seemingly unusual terminology, i.e., "single wire spacing," vs. "two
wire diameter"?

E.g., if I were at the bench winding a coil I'd place the first turn
down and either place the next turn adjacent to the first or offset it
for some "pitch," say one wire dia. This to me is seen as a gap of 1
wire dia. True, this next turn is going to be "two wire diameters" from
the beginning turn and, thus, one dia. apart.

Possibly in calculating coil length, the 2WD contains the gap size on
all turns but the last and is an aid to calculating such: Coil L = (n-1)
(D + pitch) + D ?

Seems like describing the half-full/half-empty glass, both equally
figurative but from polar opposite view points.

Not a big point ... Peter
