[Lowfer] Coil question - Bowers

I too wish to thank Mitch for his picture clear detail on building that
large coil. Mitch, your use of that "spacer-guide" support to steady the
pipes was clever. I had long though of a way to make a former that would
not flex with increased windings, and failed. Now I see the technique.
That Bowers' article was revealing too. [My issues of LowDown don't go
back to '96, however.] News for me (others?) was the D/L ratio of 2.5 (I
thought it was much less) and that the turns should be as close as
possible, as with using coated magnet wire.
But the surprising thing Bowers reveals is there is "no significant
advantage of basket weave over helical winding" for these loading coils.
And yes, use litz for best results.
As an aside, here's a wish for a consolidation of information from
years of wisdom and experience that Les Rayburn has been suggesting
setting up in CD format. Hmm, when can we order a copy, Les?
Cheers, Peter
