Ya' can't do it on a single pail, even with #14 wire. I just built a
nice loading coil and variometer today, but it required two 5 gallon
Home Depot paint pails fastened bottom-to-bottom and wound from end to
end with 500' of #14 THHN wire to get to 2.75 mH. I tapped the coil so
that each tap was slightly less than the amount of adjustment that the
variometer provided. When I get some time off from work, I will start
on mounting it outside in my antenna tuning cabinet - IF it will fit!
That thing is bigger than I thought it would be. I'll post pictures and
construction details on my web side before too long.
