This doesn't work that well. The current from the added capacitor to ground
is opposite in direction from the current in the vertical portion of the
antenna and tends to cancel it out in terms of forming the wave. The
limiting degree of this added capacity, where the capacity is VERY large
compared to the regular capacity in the antenna, and the inductance in the
coil approaches 0, is what is known as a loop antenna. So I guess I blew my
"doesn't work that well" argument! Could be just the pattern that is messed
up when you add this capacity.
