Maybe a tree antenna is just the ticket? How are the light dimmers in the 
hood?

You can say that again! I'm making another set of measurements tonight just 
to be sure. Hope to come up with some theory to explain this additional loss 
- possibly it's some 'proximity effect' from the magnetic field on the 
opposite side of the loop, as the loop becomes small.
