I agree with John's assessment of why we're seeing good propagation.
Although the cold temperatures help those of us in the frozen north with
vertical transmitting antennas (trees become pretty good insulators at zero
degrees F), the low absorption associated with the very long nights is
probably the major factor. We can usually expect outstanding conditions
during the last half of December; often better than in late January when the
average temperatures are lowest.
