[Topic was "Thanks"]
Hi again, Steve,

The topic of receivers for LF comes up on this list from time to time.
There has been recent testimonials for the ICOM R75 being a good choice.
I think it was reviewed in QST, Dec., 1999. Several lowfers on the east
coast are using it with high comments about its stability for use with
the popular software for weak sig work. I'll attach a list post by one
user, John Andrews. Also, there is info available on setting its
frequency accurately.

I use another type of receiver, an older Drake R8. I also have a
"selective level volt meter" type receiver, but not currently using it.
These are usually bought on the surplus market and some need adapting
for general use; some don't. Several on this list use SLVs for a
receiver.

Good morning,
...
Is there a particular receiver to look for and to interface
with the software that is available? Thanks again.

[Attached message from archives directed to John Andrews on the R75:]
John,

> I need a new receiver that will operate on 12VDC. I was looking at
the
ICOM R75 as a viable option and there are some really good deals on
this
particular radio at this time. My question is...has anyone tried this
radio
on LF without the use of an up-converter and if so, how does it
perform? Any
comments would be appreciated.

[John's reply:]
I bought one last summer, and am in love with it. The LF performance
is
excellent, and obviously wasn't an afterthought for the designers. My
nice
home-brew up-converter is gathering dust!

The noise blanker has been quite effective, though certainly not a
solution
to all types of noise. I did buy the 500 Hz 455 kHz filter, and that
has
been a big help. The DSP option came "free" in their sales promotion,
but it
doesn't do much of interest for what I'm doing in LF work right now.
It
would be useful for HF SSB operation, however.

Given the price and performance, I certainly recommend it.
