Lewis and all,
I've used the 706M2 successfully for receive on LF for years, but always
with some sort of external preamp, usually with additional RF filtering.
Lewis, you have an Argo capture of LIP using my 706 from last season. The
accuracy and frequency setting ability are excellent with appropriate
calibration, even without the high stability time base. My Mark II fails,
however, on short term stability due to a sub-Hertz FM that follows the
temperature controlled fan cycles and this makes QRSS30 and slower signals
difficult to read in a screen capture and this results in some missed
receptions.
I recall the peak to peak ripple to be about 0.2 to 0.3 Hertz over about a
90 second period here and others have about the same results. The original
706, I understand, had a continuously operating fan and is said to have
better performance in short term stability than the M2. I don't know about
the current G version fan operation, but I would certainly purchase the
high stability oscillator were I buying a 706 today.
