For a science project for one of my kids in school, I made a veg. battery
that worked on potatoes or lemons, I didn't try anything else. Take a piece
of  galvanize ( for the Zinc ) and a piece of copper. insert in veg. or
lemon connect wires to such.
I used it to charge a cap. and a SCR to fire when the voltage was right to
flash a light emitting diode.
I paralleled a couple for more current.
