Hank et al.,
Your post begs my original question of a few days ago, which remains
unanswered -- Is v8 still being updated / bugfixed? If V9 is basically at
Alpha level (which is what I would call it, based on your description of its
architectural evolution, and as such, should not have been released to the
user base) -- then are known and reported problems in V8, the released
production version, being addressed, or are we just expected to live with
them until V9 is ready for its close-up? (Whenever that is?) And we are just
expected to have faith that the perpetually unfixed V8 bugs are being
addressed in V9, and will work... someday?
Now, I'm a computer old-timer, and I've always volunteered for Beta programs
whenever given the chance -- but IMO V9 isn't even really ready for Beta,
because it is still under active development. A Beta test is expected to
have a Release Candidate, a version of the entire product that is believed
to be complete and relatively bug-free based on the results of the Alpha
stage of testing, but of course is known not to be. The Beta volunteer user
base (not everyone cottons to the idea of testing imperfect software and
finding bugs) tests, details, and reports the remaining bugs, and they get
killed, one at a time and usually in triage fashion, with the highest
priority bugs addressed first. That's fine. But SUPPORT OF THE RELEASED
PRODUCTION CODE GOES ON during the Alpha and Beta stages of the next
version! Otherwise, the end user is left with production code (V8) that used
to be supported, but that isn't any more due to reassignment of
development/support resources to the new version in Alpha or Beta test --
which are known to be (a) incomplete or (b) imperfect vehicles,
respectively.
If I might be allowed to put it crudely, this situation blows big-time.
Dennis needs to clarify this.

When Microsoft notified the world in 2007 that Visual FoxPro would no longer
be supported, Dennis didn't really have a choice about continuing
development in that language. Converting everything to .NET is not a
trivial undertaking, so I would recommend that we be patient while that
conversion process continues to take shape.
I purchased Logic9, installed it, and run it side by side with Logic8.
Logic8 continues to be my logger of choice for DXing, while I am waiting for
Logic9 to catch up. My recommendation is to throw our support behind the
continuing development of Logic9, because it will be on a platform that has
a stated future in the Microsoft world, and just hang tight until the kinks
are worked out.

I need to throw my $0.02 in too.
I much prefer this email list to the "web based" forum alternative which I
guess is now the official site? Sending/receiving LOGIC-related info is much
easier using an "email approach" than posting on a forum (in my opinion).
I too started with LOGIC 4 and have not gone beyond LOGIC 8. It meets 99%
of my needs, and yes, has a few quirks, which I live with. I won't go into
them because it's not worth the bother.
But my questions are regarding LOGIC 9...
a) For those of you have gone from V8 to V9, what do you gain? What do you
lose?
b) I have always had trouble when upgrading LOGIC versions, in that the
default databases (especially PREFIX and DXCC tables) do not meet my needs.
In the past I have had to spend a lot of time fixing errors produced by the
upgrades, rebuilding tables to suit my needs, etc. If I were to do a
standard install of LOGIC9, then import my log files, is there a way to
simply COPY my LOGIC8 directories and files on top of the new version? Which
files & directories? What to avoid?
Glad to see there is still some life on this list!
