All of the contacts were intact.  The problem was that all but a 
dozen or so were duplicated.

The utility to remove duplicate contacts fixed it in about a half a second.

I am tentatively of the opinion that the "right" way to synchronize 
two computers like I do is to:

1.  Restore a back up from one to the other using the "append" option.
2.  Run the "remove duplicates" utility.

So far, I have not thought of the downside to this routine, and it 
should keep me from overwriting newer data with older -- which would 
be really bad.
