[LOGic] Backups, Transfers, etc - WHAT Files?

Roger all that Bill,

I back up (copy actually) the entire LOGic directory to CD. It's what works
for me.

Many may already know this as well but one tidbit for those installing LOGic
on a new PC is to copy the entire LOGic directory from the old PC to the new
PC first, then install LOGic over top of it. Of course it needs to be the
same version.

Subject: [LOGic] Backups, Transfers, etc - WHAT Files?

OK, some of you know this, but I dare say there some who do not. In earlier
(much earlier!) threads I've often remarked on the need to ensure you are
saving/backing up/transferring the proper files.

This is useful when:

1.	Backing up LOGic to ensure everything you need is backed up
automatically - and what is not, you have saved.
2.	Transferring data, files, reports, etc. from one computer
installation to another.
3.	Changing from one LOGic version to another.

When you do a LOGic backup, you are NOT backing up report forms, log forms,
lists, images used as a graphic in your QSL card design, fonts unique to
your QSL card and perhaps not used by any other application, stationinfo.ini
file, etc. etc.

SO . what else should you protect and save? LOTS !

PREPARATION - -

As a prerequisite to protected saving, you should utilize a folder outside
of the application. This ensures the application itself can never overwrite
a file you created which coincidentally (or on purpose!) has the exact same
name as that which is contained in the application, whether you are
performing a full install or a patch or an add-on.

I therefore suggest making a directory structure something like this:

C:My LOGic Files which then has multiple underlying folders:

Supplied Files - Which is where you keep unaltered copies of files as
supplied by LOGic. If you ever have a need to start over, or refer to a
"virgin" file, this is where you can go.

K1UQ Files (Use your call sign, of course!) - Which is where you will save
copies of files you have created or modified for use within LOGic.

You might even wish to further define by inclusion of the LOGic version:

My LOGic files\

            LOGic8\

                        Supplied Files\

                        K1UQ Files\

            LOGic7\

                        Supplied Files\

                        K1UQ Files\

There are LOGic files you should always save and retain. Be sure each time
you alter any of these to resave, and if you wish to retain multiple
iterations, setup a file renaming scheme. You can always modify the suffix
as follows:

Example: I want to save a file with the suffix .dbf and I want to keep
multiple iterations. I could do this by modifying the suffix to read:
.dbf_K1UQ01, .dbf_K1UQ02, ..dbf_K1UQ09, .dbf_K1UQ10, .dbf_K1UQ11, etc.
As I added the "_K1UQnn" I know to revert to the original filename for ANY
modified suffix all I need do is remove the "_K1UQnn"

LOGic FILES as a minimum TO BACKUP / SAVE - -

DATA -

The following are log DATA files and are found in, and would be copied
from/to: C:\LOGic8\logdata

Note: these are probably the minimum you should consider saving. Your
station use and use of LOGic may dictate otherwise.

Don't shoot me if you don't include these or others!

Log.CDX

Log.DBF

Log.FPT

LOGic backs up log data.

List.CDX

Lists.DBF

LOGic backup does NOT backup your list files.

Logfields.CDX

Logfields.dbf

LOGic backup does NOT backup your logfields files.

Stationinfo.ini

(found in: C:\LOGic8\logdata)

LOGic backup does NOT backup your stationinfo.ini file.

This .ini text file retains all info you entered into LOGic's Tools > Setup
> Station information. If you are performing a clean, first time install
onto another computer, much easier to copy this file. Save the "as supplied
file", then copy your file into: C:\LOGic8\logdata. Alternatively, as this
is a text file, you can use Notepad and copy/paste from an older (LOGic7,
perhaps) to a newer (LOGic8, perhaps) install.

LOGFORMS -

The following are log FORM files and are found in, and would be copied
from/to: C:\LOGic8\logdata\logforms

Note: LOGic backup does NOT backup the following:

DEFAULT.logform (probably from an older version of LOGic, possibly migrated
to a newer version) and possibly altered/customized by you. If so, you need
to save it.

main.logform - most likely what you are using as your primary log form, and
possibly altered/customized by you. If so, you need to save it.

xxxxx.logform - If you have altered and or customized any other log forms
for contests, etc, you need to save them.

REPORTS -

The following are log REPORT files and are found in, and would be copied
from/to: C:\LOGic8\report

Note: LOGic backup does NOT backup the following:

Any reports you created or modified should be saved.

Note: there are TWO files for each report, and both MUST be saved. One
without the other is useless.

Examples (two of my QSL card designs):

#5 K1UQ CARD FRONT - 2 CARD STRIP.FPT

#5 K1UQ CARD FRONT - 2 CARD STRIP.REP

#10 K1UQ CARD REAR MULTI QSO DUAL WINDOW VER6.FPT

#10 K1UQ CARD REAR MULTI QSO DUAL WINDOW VER6.REP

MISC -

Graphic image(s)

Save all images you embedded into any QSL cards you created using LOGic.

These images are not to be confused with those supplied by LOGic.

Example:

Drawing2.gif (This is the image used on the front of one of my QSL card
designs)

Text Files -

You might also consider keeping text files (created using notepad, etc) with
any notations about reports you created, printing reports, importing data,
images created, personal notes and instructions, hints and tips, etc.

Fonts

If you have imported unique fonts into your OS, you ought to save a copy of
the font for portability from one computer/OS to another. This ensures you
always have a copy.

NOTE: there are many good web sites from which you can probably obtain such
a font, but it doesn't hurt to retain one in a backup.

Hopefully I haven't forgotten too much, and more importantly - I hope this
is useful.

Regards, Bill K1UQ
