While I agree with the intent of your rant, though I would have probably chosen different words, I should point out in the interest of fairness that my most recently renewed certificates say they expire in 2009-01-27, which I think is three years.  My first one was a year.  So those overkill morons at the ARRL have listened just a bit!   I totally agree that trying to have encryption methods and security features reminiscent of the KGB (the CIA would never use a postcard) is total lunacy.  I really believe that some idiot at the ARRL made a big mistake and they know it, but that no one will hold him or her responsible for this poor decision.  Several years ago I had a talk at Dayton with the guy who started eQSL, and he said that he was convinced that the ARRL knew his system was better but that they had already invested in LOTW and the institutional inertia was just too great.  This was at the time that ARRL was just rolling out LOTW.  Unfortunately the bad inertia just keeps rolling along!
