I can't speak about the guts of the program but I think this is in
part, because there are too many unresolvable (at least from the
software's point of view) CQ and ITU Zones when you first enter in a
U.S. callsign. Take at look at the Prefix Table. Most of the CQ and
ITU Zones for the "K" callsigns are blank (I'm not talking about the
ones listed by state in which the zone is filled in).
As an illustration: Go to Tools|Setup|Prefix Table and do a (G)et.
Type in AB4RL. You're going to first jump to a generic K4,N4,W4 line
where the zones are not filled in (because amonst other things, W4 is
one of those cases where we occupy more than one zone - it's somewhat
indeterminate) based on callsign alone. This is what happens when you
try and log a U.S. call and the zone info is not automatically filled
in from the Prefix Table (despite the presence of the expressions
under Log|Setup|Copy from Prefix Table).
Where I think LOGic should work but doesn't right now is if you have
both Info and Callbook open. You type in AB4RL; see that I'm from FL;
and all the info is filled out in the logform, EXCEPT zone information
is still not filled in even though it's listed correctly in the Info
window.
Maybe LOGic should be programmed to get the Zone not just from the
Prefix Table but also from the Callbook info i.e. work in the same
manner as the Info window works.

I've Cc: Dennis on this one too. I hope what I've wrote makes some
sense to both you and him.
