You absolutely correct. We have some excellent hams in this area that prefer to recluse themselves to only contest activities. I know in one or two cases, it is due to their profession, as they are on radios and computers all day long. I cannot blame them, but sure do miss them! The others, I cannot say for sure what the rationale is.

I'm sorry to hear that as I'm from Moline (Quad Cities) and have relatives
in Astoria. It seems to be a problem everywhere. In the 60's and 70's a
person could hardly find a clear spot on 40M CW at night. Now it's like a
wasteland. It's not propagation but apathy I guess. Maybe we've traded
camaraderie for contests. People don't seem to rag chew as much s they
used to. It's the same here in SE Nebraska. UGH
