Hello Sam,
Not anymore unfortunately. There is a very disinterested group of hams in
Western, IL anymore and a couple of very good repeaters that
are underutilized in Macomb unless the weather gets bad or the Martians
invade. This seems to be the case for all of Western IL, from the Quad
Cities to Quincy and east to Peoria. Peoria still has weekly NETS, and I
think Carthage has one as well. Monmouth, Galesburg and Macomb have
discontinued the NETS for a lack of participants. Quincy seems to have
allot of activity and they may have some NETS, but I have no way of knowing
what or when they are.
This is why I sold all my VHF/UHF gear and went exclusively HF. There is no
reason to have the gear if there is no one to talk to.
There are a few of us who meet regularly on Saturday nights for coffee and
an eyeball QSO that has always been open to all hams, but only a few bother
to show up. LEARC meets on the same schedule that they have always had, and
a good bunch of folks gather. I'm not a member but enjoy setting in on the
meetings. There is much to learn and everybody seems to be glad to see you.
Join me sometime.
It is a sad day for new hams in this area, as many have never been on the
air but wait patiently for Martians or some other calamity so they can
assist in Emergency Communications.
I hope this doesn't sound mean spirited (often, things I say and write are
taken that way), it is the truth as I see it.
73,
Steve KA9MOT
