Good morning!

Sponsored by Scouts in Illinois and Indiana (Scout Troop 17 from
Champaign, IL and BSA Venturing Crew 272 from Fountain County, IN),
the high-tech Scout “Space Jamboree” (Space Jam) is held annually at
the Chanute Air Museum in Rantoul, Illinois.

This year’s Space Jam will be held on the weekend of August 5-7, 2011
and will introduce Scouts (boys and girls) to thirty-plus high-tech
merit badges including Radio, Electronics, Computers, Engineering,
Aviation, Nuclear Science and more. Amateur Radio will be featured at
Space Jam, both as a Merit Badge activity and an interactive activity
with ham stations, APRS, a radio equipped high-altitude balloon
launch, and a overhead blimp beaming streaming video. Currently Scouts
from more than a dozen states are scheduled to participate in Space
Jam.

Thanks to Dr. Howard Brooks, KC9BQN (the Paul B. Kissinger Professor
of Physics and Astronomy at DePauw University), a high-altitude
balloon will be launched. The balloon is expected to reach 105,000
feet, and there are hopes of setting some balloon communications
records. SSTV, APRS, telemetry and a cross-band repeater will be
onboard. (See frequency notes, below)

In addition, a contact with the International Space Station has been
confirmed for Saturday afternoon – more details to follow.

And finally, the Scouts will participate in an Airport Disaster Drill.
Five Search and Rescue teams will be using APRS (WB9SA -1 through -5)
and 2-meter communications. There will also be a ground-based ATV
system and a 15’ blimp carrying a second ATV system.

Needless to say, there will be a lot for Scouts to experience, and the
opportunity for Ham Radio operators from the surrounding states to
work the Scouts and each other through the balloon. Please let your
long distant 2m/440 friends know about the QSO possibilities, and help
set a distance record!

Additional information on Space Jam can be found at www.spacejamboree.com .

The organizer of the event is Brian Walker, K9BKW, Advisor to Crew
272, WB9SA is the Crew 272 Club Call. I am one of the merit badge
instructors.
