02/11 - Josh, KC9AHI
-----------------------------------------------
There was considerable discussion about RACES, ARES and SKYWARN programs. It was basically decided that the need for a local ARES and/or RACES group is not imminent, since local hams are not used in any major capacity for public safety communications and a lack of active volunteers is likely to be an issue at this point in time. It's possible this issue will be revisited at a later time when more members are present and thus more input is available.
The SKYWARN program was discussed. I am enclosing (BELOW) an email from Pat Ryan, KC6VVT, which was sent to Pat via the NWS in Davenport. I am planning on attending this meeting on 02/03. Interested parties should let me know if you plan to attend so that we can carpool. It was decided that a meeting is necessary this year prior to severe WX season in order to discuss net control procedures and other protocall.
Regards,
Jesse Risley, K9JLR

Good afternoon!
We have some exciting news! Today, as I write this note, our new amateur radio tower is being erected! With this tower we are adding rotational 2m and 440 beam antennas. We expect to almost double our range, allowing us to communicate dependably via amateur radio into areas where coverage has been unreliable in the past. This includes Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Sterling-Rock Falls, and perhaps Dubuque.
With this added capability, we know that we will face new challenges. How do we effectively and efficiently incorporate the increased information flow into our existing operations? We know that collectively we will have to be organized!
We'd like to get everyone together for a meeting before spring to develop a communication strategy and severe weather net protocol between our office and all of our participating Skywarn amateur radio groups. For this to work, we need 1 or 2 representatives from each ham Skywarn group who can participate in discussions on behalf of their respective organization to attend a meeting so we can work out a mutually beneficial strategy.
We have set aside Saturday February 3rd at 10 am for this meeting here at the office. Would it be possible for you or someone else with knowledge of your local Skywarn network and communication capability to attend this meeting? Also, in some cases I'm not sure who the right person to contact is, so if you feel someone else should be in on this discussion, please forward this email as needed. My only limitation is that to keep this discussion effective (and to have enough space here at the office!), we should try to have only one or 2 people from each area/group.
Please let me know what you think and if someone from your group will be able to attend!
Regards - and thanks very much for your help-
