A strong and rapidly developing winter storm is expected to impact our
weather this weekend. Significant snow accumulations, as well as strong
winds with near blizzard conditions and dangerously low wind chill
values, are possible. If you have travel plans or other any other
weather-sensitive plans you should monitor the latest forecasts and
statements.
The storm is expected to move across the Plains and
Midwest, headed toward the Great Lakes. The brunt of the precipitation
will fall across our area from Saturday afternoon into Saturday night.
The exact track of the storm is still unclear. Any deviation in the
storm track may result in different precipitation types and amounts.
This
storm will involve rain changing to snow. In some locations northwest
of Cedar Rapids, the precipitation will begin as snow. The snow will
be heavy at times with accumulations of 3 to 8 inches possible. In
addition, an extended period of 25 to 40 mph winds, with higher gusts,
will result in considerable blowing and drifting snow. Near blizzard,
white-out conditions may occur.
Temperatures will also fall
sharply as this storm system departs our area. They should fall into
the teens by Sunday morning. The combination of strong winds and cold
temperatures will lead to dangerously low wind chill values.
