[LeArc] RFI from Walgreens signs

I thought area hams might be interested in the following. If you aren't
aware, Walgreens' supplier has been trying to get the Macomb City Council to
approve a new electronic sign for the store here in Macomb. If it has the
potential to cause interference to hams and the fire department and/or other
communications, a red flag should be raised. It might be instructive to call it
to the attention of city officials. The messages below are from a listserv of
radio enthusiasts in the Chicago area.

Don and Group

Walgreens supplier of the LED signboard is currently going around the south
Cook County area (MABAS 24) doing repairs, changes etc to the signboards.
They wipe out MABAS 24 dispatch frequency (153.890) within 500 to 1000 feet.

I understand that other fire fequencies might also have problems. This info
was sent out as a MABAS dispatch.

I do not have the Florida company name. Will have name and telephone number
Monday (9/11) or sooner.

Regards
Bob

Hello Everyone I have a Repeater on 224.740 It Covers Most of N/W Indiana
At 99 Percent of the Walgreen Stores, There is a Dead Carrier with a Buzz
that I can here on this Freq 224.740 for about 3 Blocks, . I have taken a
HT inside but it is Stronger outside, They do have the New Electronic
display signs up but I have actually picked this up with that off and the
Store Closed, I know not many Scanners pick up this freq but if anyone has
one and You happen to be in the Area of a Walgreen Store, Please Let Me know
if You pick it up too, I would like to isolate this to being a Wide Spread
interference Before I make a Complaint to Walgreen or the FCC, They have a
few more Dollars than I do and I want to make sure .Also It is not a
Harmonic it is Right on 224.740 , this is 24/7 for the last 6 Mo and I
really did not care until a User Complained to Me about it, You can E-Me
Direct if You like at KA9QJG at WOWWAY.Dir

PS Anyone in Range Feel free to Use the Repeater 224.740 Out

223.140 In PL 131.8

Happy Scanning

Thanks Bob, that is Great info Because, I have a Friend who is a Radio Tech
at For Motorola Tri City, and He had called Me about Doing a DF hunt Near a
Walgreen in Lansing Il, They had a Fire Near By and was getting some type of
Interference, on 153.890 , I will relay this info to Him too, Maybe I
will take My spectrum Analyzer by there and see what I can Find. Maybe the
Interference I get on 224.740 is a Harmonic.

Thanks Don

Happy Scanning

Lansing has two Walgreen sites. One had a problem and one did not. Landsing
Fire Department reported the problem during an MABAS 24 advisor meeting in
July. I checked the Oak Forest site and found the same problem on 153.890. A
telephone call was made to Walgreens and they quickly responded with fixes by a
Florida company. Both Lansing and Oak Forest have been repaired. The loudest
interference I found was from a store at 183rd and Halsted. The site would
open the squelch over 1000 feet from the store.

I have info that indicates that a car wash located on the NW corner of
Ridgeland Ave and Route 83 in Palos Heights also causes problems on 153.890. Do
not know if it is the same company.

Also have info that a similar problem exists on other fire frequencies.

The Walgreen contact is: George Fragias, 847-315-4418, Cell is 847-924-2689.

The company is Hi-Tech Electronics in Florida. The phone is 727-531-4800.
The contact is Steve Taylor in Engineering on Extension 115.

Both Walgreen and HI-Tech have been real nice.

There is no complaint filed by us to the FCC. The local FCC office in Park
Ridge is aware of the problem and that we are solving the problem.

Please let me know if anyone else is having problems in their area.
