It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Brad =
Pioveson,
W9FX, as Assistant Section Manager. Brad is located in Benton, Il. and =
has
been licensed since 1963. His previous callsigns were WN9KNP and =
WA9KNP. He
spent the majority of his working years as a senior maintenance manager =
in an
underground bituminous coal mine. Brad and his wife, Sharon, who is =
currently
studying for her Technician license, are both retired. Avocationally he =
is a
member of the Hurricane Watch Net, the Society of Midwestern Contesters, =
and
SATERN, an organization for which he serves as National Training =
Coordinator.=20
He also spent several years in a variety of state and region-level =
Navy-Marine
Corps MARS leadership posts. His radio activities these days include CW
DX'ing, HF and VHF contesting, antennas and chasing Meteors on 144 MHz. =
I am
very excited to have Brad on board as an ASM. We have needed ARRL
representation in southern Illinois for quite some time. When you see =
him at
hamfests please give him a big welcome.

Members of the St Clair Amateur Radio Club participated in the =
WalkAmerica and
the Shrine Parade. N9YPM organized and headed up the WalkAmerica
communications support. Those helping out were: WA9MGX, KB9UEF, =
KB9WQJ,
KB9BGY, WA9TZL, W3LSA, and KC9AEC. N9HZD spearheaded the clubs' support =
of
communications for the Shrine Parade. Those helping were: WA9IUF, =
KB9UEF,
KC9DZC, W9BP, KB9BGY, KC9AUJ, and WB9IGB. Also the club sends a special
thanks to W9RQR, for always being available during these events to =
provide a
link to fixed government communications systems if needed.

Another Field Day is history. I know of one club here in the section =
that
operated under the new "F" classification. I hope that everyone had a =
great
Field Day and that everyone was safe. We, here in Rockford, learned the =
next
week why we practice for emergencies. We had a microburst go through =
the city
with winds of 60-80 MPH with some gusts as high as 100MPH. There was a =
lot of
damage to trees and power lines--some residents were without power for =
5-6
days. I am sure that communities east of here were also affected by =
this
storm on July 5th. I want to personally thank all of those hams that =
served
in their ARES roles during that emergency. All of them did a great job. =
 Hams
here in Illinois have been working very hard this year as many severe =
storms
have come and gone throughtout the state. May 9 and 10 comes to mind =
also
when tornadoes ripped through the central part of the state. During =
that time
hams provided excellant communication coverage. And all deserve a big
thank-you.

In Monticello, Illinois the Rodeo Parade took place on Field Day =
weekend. and
local hams lent their assistance to parade organizers and the Monticello
police department with communications over the parade route. This was a =
busy
weekend for them.

We have a new DEC (District Emergency Coordinator) for the border =
counties of
northern Illinois. He is Wayne Hansen, KA9IMX. Wayne has been an =
Assistant
EC for 10 years and has extensive training in weather and other =
emergency
communications.
