Hello All,
I got some bad news Tuesday evening from Bob Engle, K9QLL. Some of you =
may have heard this by now but for those who haven't, Steve Wenger, =
W9QLF of Jacksonville passed away Tuesday afternoon. Some of you know =
Steve and I thought I should send this note to all on my list. For =
those who did not know him this is a little of what I can tell you. I =
have known Steve ever since I got my ham license. Going to Steve's =
house was like taking a trip back in time for a ham. His favorite mode =
of operation was AM. His equipment was ancient by today's standards but =
with good reason. Steve's passion on the HF bands was to have that =
"broadcast quality" audio. Steve's voice was deep and his signals =
resonated with a quality that you would find if you were listening to =
Paul Harvey on the broadcast band. Many components of his station were =
former broadcast station pieces with names like Gates. For receiving =
his friends on 160m AM in the wee hours of the morning he often used the =
finest AM receivers ever made with names like the HRO-60. You didn't =
see much in his ham shack that didn't have tubes glowing. One of the =
long standing stories around was that Bob, K9QLL had told Steve if he =
got another piece in the shack that weighed as much as some of the =
amplifiers he used they would find it all in the basement when the floor =
gave way. I remember Steve as a mentor. Someone who had probably =
forgot more about amplifier circuits that I will ever know. Someone =
that enjoyed showing you what his "old" gear could do and could explain =
how every piece worked, inside and out. Steve, along with others in the =
area was instrumental in helping restart the old Jacksonville Amateur =
Area Radio Club and helped change it to the Jacksonville Amateur Radio =
Society. He helped with getting the local repeater back up and running =
and in its new location on top of the Beecher High-rise. He helped with =
amateur radio classes that produced many new hams in the area. There =
are so many things that I will remember Steve for. Most importantly I =
am glad to say that Steve Wenger was my friend. In the coming months =
and years we will miss him but we will never forget him.

This is the obituary for Dr. Steven Wenger:
Dr. Steven Wenger, 58, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday afternoon, December =
16, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born June =
11, 1945 in Horton, Kansas, the son of Kenneth and Thelma Sernes Wenger. =
He married Barbara Youmans on December 23, 1972 in Ireland, and she =
survives. He is also survived by one son, Noah Wenger of Jacksonville; =
two sisters, Barbara Norris of Shawnee, Kansas and Margaret (husband, =
Gary) Hartter of Lindsborg, Kansas; two brothers, Paul (wife, Lisa) =
Wenger of Erie, Kansas and , David (wife, Trudi) Wenger of Lenexa, =
Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dr. Wenger was =
professor and Chairman of the Psychology Department at MacMurray College =
in Jacksonville. He completed his undergraduate studies at Washburn =
University in Topeka, Kansas, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees =
from Kansas State University. Dr. Wenger loved teaching, genealogy =
research, deer hunting, and fishing. He was an avid collector of =
electronics, a musician, and a ham radio operator. Dr. Wenger served on =
the board of the Youth Attention Center in Jacksonville and was advisor =
to Psi Chi at MacMurray College. He served in the United States Air =
Force, stationed at Rantoul Air Force base in Champaign, during the =
Vietnam War. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour. A memorial =
mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2003, at the Church =
of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. The =
family will meet friends from 12 Noon until 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the =
Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Church of Our =
Saviour, MacMurray College, or the Youth Attention Center. Condolences =
may be sent to the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.
