Duane N9SSN,

Of course, I encourage your keeping a club BBS or a Personal PBBS active
on a designated packet frequency such as 145.010, 145.030 or 145.050 for
your area use for one-on-one keyboard practice, packet networking and
drill practice, or a regular meeting emergency network (ARES Net). I am
sure your local packet network could stand a revival.

A local station is now experimenting with establishing regular WX packet
bulletins on 145.030 from an EMWIN satellite terminal. It could take hold
and become another use for the abandoned packet station.

Do look into joining an existing packet network on the nationwide APRS
frequency of 144.390, and thus providing a digipeater service for APRS
equipped mobile stations in your area or passing by, with a properly APRS
formatted TNC and 2 meter rig for regular unattended use as well. All it
takes is a little effort to get it right.

Although not intended for messaging, this Automatic Packet/Position
Reporting System appears to be one surviving use of 1200 baud packet for
those interested. The APRS and WX network is also an example of usable
packet service still ongoing.

APRS using an older DOS computer (APRSdos) program can also provide NTS
formatted messaging relay on a simple basis in emergencies. With the more
modern APRS Window based programs such as APRS-sa or UI-View and a
compatible mapping software, it can also provide an excellent mapping
display to street level of mobile stations active in your area, or for
emergency tactical use.
